Dengue
The dengue virus belongs to the family Flaviviridae; four serotypes can be distinguished by serologic methods, and are designated as dengue-1, dengue-2, dengue-3, and dengue-4. The infection in humans by one serotype produces lifelong immunity against infection with that serotype, but only temporary and partial protection against other serotypes.
Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are primarily diseases of tropical and sub tropical areas, and the four different dengue serotypes are maintained in a cycle that involves humans and the Aedes mosquito. Infections produce a spectrum of clinical illness ranging from a nonspecific viral syndrome to severe and fatal hemorrhagic disease.
