  •   E.g. Maternal Mortality
     

    Five countries in our Region have maternal mortality rates that one of our countries, the USA, overcame 60 years ago.

    The causes of the majority of these deaths are well known and understood.

    These deaths are avoidable through simple interventions.

    The diseases and health issues for which cost-effective solutions are widely available and almost universally applied
  • Those areas that represent the fundamental, and unaddressed, health rights of our population
  • Priority problems that are hidden behind the "tyranny of the averages"

Disabilities and rehabilitation services

Persons with disabilities is of major concern to us, since a considerable number of these people would need services for the rest of their lives.  Sound planning is therefore required if these people are to get the care and attention they need.

PAHO has been working in close collaboration with the Rehabilitation Department of the Ministry of Health in setting up a surveillance, monitoring and evaluation system to gather and collate information on persons with disabilities, since we recognize the importance of relevant information if the level of care and service required are to be provided.  A computer has been provided to assist in this area.  We have also been involved in training of staff.[ Read more ]
