PAHO has built an impressive record of public health achievements. Some
of these achievements are:
- Complete eradication of small pox in the Americas
- Eradication of polio in the region
- Rapidly closing in on neonatal tetanus
- More than 80 percent of children in the region are now vaccinated
against six major vaccine-preventable diseases
- Eradication of measles in the English speaking Caribbean
PAHO’s efforts have also contributed to:
- Major reductions in infant mortality rates
- Significant improvements in life expectancy
- Substantial reductions in death rates from communicable diseases
- Availability of safe drinking water to growing segments of the population
although major disparities in access still exist
- Establishment of an efficient emergency preparedness program to
prepare for and respond to disasters
- Increased access of women to better quality health care.
